- Folic acid can be taken naturally during the ingestion of dark green leafy vegetables, citrus fruits and beans, but it can also be taken artificially, in the form of tablets prescribed by a doctor.
For these reasons, pregnant women should take folic acid, because it helps the growth of the fetus. Similarly, those who are in the process of rehabilitation should also take it.
Folic Acid as an antidote against Colon Cancer
There are studies that relate folic acid to the prevention and reduction of colon cancer.
A study from the University of Zaragoza concludes that a food supplement that includes folic acid reduces the risk of colon cancer.
What is the right amount of Folic Acid to Prevent Colon Cancer?
It can be 650 micrograms per day. This amount can be obtained naturally by consuming one cup of cooked lentils, one cup of cooked spinach and one orange.
However, a doctor may prescribe vitamin supplements that include folic acid to complete the minimum daily dosage.
Other Forms of Colon Cancer Prevention
Folic acid has already been shown to be an effective treatment for colon cancer, but it is not the only way to do so. There are many other measures that can be taken to reduce the chances of developing this disease:
- Maintain a healthy weight. A relationship has been observed between abdominal fat and the onset of colorectal cancer.
- Physical activity improves your health and decreases your chances of getting colon cancer.
- Reduce consumption of sausages, processed meats, and grills, and instead increase intake of fruits and vegetables, especially dark green leaves such as spinach.
- Moderate the consumption of alcoholic beverages and eliminate tobacco consumption.
- A healthy life that includes the intake of folic acid, reduces the chances of developing colon cancer, as well as improving the quality of life in general.
